Landscaping to restore 'jewel'

A specialist stone company is set to revamp parts of Knightstone Island as work on the site comes to a close this Spring. The firm will landscape and renovate public areas of the island, while Redrow Homes continues to create luxury housing on the private areas.North Somerset Council has awarded a contract worth more than £120,000 to Afan Landscapes. The company will create a 'rock skirt' around the island's edge along the public footpath. This will involve putting an attractive rock formation between the buildings and the footpath, while seating will also be built into the rocks.A rockery will also be created in the middle of the carriage drive and it is hoped the landscaping project will fit in with the rest of the seafront.North Somerset councillor John Crockford-Hawley, responsible for strategic planning and transport, made the decision to award the contract. He said: "Come the summer we shall see Knightstone arise as a seafront jewel after many years of neglect and decay."High quality apartments will add a touch of residential style and help boost local businesses with an increased demand for restaurants and other leisure facilities.

Lakeshore property central to proposed master plan

ONTONAGON -- An effort to purchase the former Lakeshore shipyard property is the "signature" of the Village of Ontonagon's master plan.

Pat Coleman of U.P. Engineers and Architects, who is preparing the plan, made that statement to the Ontonagon Planning Commission on Monday.

Everyone Coleman spoke to in preparing the plan pointed to obtaining that property, on the shore of Lake Superior and the Ontonagon River, as being vital for economic development, he said.

"This should be your focus, where you spend your energy," he said. "Once the property is acquired, the rest of the plan can fall into place."

He suggested the village needs a developer to buy the land and prepare infrastructure. Coleman said that since some of the land would be used for a public beach area, there would be a need to provide restrooms, parking and landscaping.

Mercury Insurance Premier Sponsor of Community Service Event

Los Angeles-based Mercury Insurance has committed to become a Premier Sponsor of Big Sunday '07, dubbed the largest community service event in America.

Big Sunday '07 will be staged April 28 and 29, 2007, throughout California's Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura Counties. On those days, organizers expect to approximately 50,000 volunteers of to participate in more than 350 community projects. Volunteers will rehabilitate and landscape schools, cook and serve meals in homeless shelters, landscape youth centers in East Los Angeles, sing to lonely seniors in Beverly Hills, clean up trash along Southern California rivers and beaches, knit clothing for premature babies, and assemble packages for our troops, among the many projects that will be tackled over the weekend-long civic event.

Hippy chic

But hippy chic is only one element of the island's cultural heritage. "Ibiza has seen a steady influx of visitors to its shores for thousands of years," says Grimshaw. "From the Greeks and the Phoenicians [who founded Ibiza Town] to the Byzantines and Moors, it has always been this rich melting pot."

The island's ability to absorb new influences is still much in evidence. From restored traditional farmhouses (some of which have now been turned into agrotourismo hotels) to colourful Moroccan-themed stone fincas and modernist glass cubes, a dramatic mix of tastes and cultures exist happily side by side.

Perched on a clifftop on a stretch of the coast overlooking the rocky outcrop of Es Verda island in the south-west, Casa Inspiration is one such tribute to contemporary, purist design.
