Redlands youth gardening program wins grant

A Redlands program designed to teach at-risk students to appreciate the outdoors while also building science and leadership skills has received a grant from the National Gardening Association.

The garden is part of the Micah House II after-school program, which provides at-risk students with homework assistance, computer instruction and recreational activities. The nonprofit organization, which is a ministry of Trinity Church in Redlands, serves more than 50 students in elementary through high school.

Students who have worked in the garden have reaped a number of benefits, according to Kathy Stinson, program coordinator at Micah House II.

Bella Vista Lake Study Released

BELLA VISTA -- The long awaited results of a $65,000 analysis of Bella Vista's seven lakes show the worst cause of contamination might be the easiest to fix.Alan Cibuzar, president of AW Research Laboratories, said Thursday that stormwater runoff is a bigger problem for Bella Vista's lakes than leaky septic systems. It is a problem, however, that can be addressed with landscaping techniques that use more shrubs and trees and less gravel and pavement. The results came more than a year after the Minnesota-based research company was hired to detect sources of contamination of Bella Vista's seven lakes. The company flew over more than 1,000 acres in Bella Vista conducting low-altitude thermal and chlorophyll imaging.Preliminary results released in January showed lakeside landscaping techniques are more to blame for contamination than septic tank leaching.

Frantic gardeners caught in a deep freeze, but spirits (and many ...

I almost got buried under the onslaught of e-mails before and after last weekend's weather.

Most folks wanted to know what to do ahead of time, and basically I just said "run in circles, scream and shout."

In the face of potentially catastrophic weather, that works about as well as anything.

Afterwards was a little different, depending on the area.

A gardening friend near Memphis called it "Black Sunday" and moaned and groaned about the loss of her hydrangea flowers and new fig crop.

But the "best worst" e-mail was from a gardener a couple of states over, whose landscape was, well, here are her exact words:

"We got smacked this weekend. Saturday morning low was 21F. It went below 32 just after 11 p.m. and kept going. Thank gawd the sun came up when it did.

Lawsuits, Suspensions, and Fines…Oh My!

Professional tennis turned into a serial drama including a player petition, a storm-off during a meeting with the ATP Chair, one lawsuit being filed, and another threatened to be on the way.

Get the popcorn ready. This is a thriller!

Act I

Key Biscayne, FL, site of the Sony Ericsson Open.

Scene I: The ATP makes two announcements. The obvious one is that they are killiing the Round Robin (pdf). The second is that Shanghai will be a new Masters Series event, and will cede its Masters Cup status for 2009.

While that wouldn't seem to be a big deal ordinarily, discussions go on with tournament directors and players over changes to the calendar behind-the-scenes, and create a veritable tempest.

Scene II: The German tennis federation (DTB) files suit against the ATP in U.S.

Fought the lawn, and the lawn won?

When it comes to growing grass, do you feel like you're far from having a green thumb? Justin Cave, host of HGTV's “Ground Breakers," shares simple tips on preparing your lawn for spring.

Spring is here, and for most of us, that means getting our backyard and lawn into shape. Nobody's lawn is perfect and for the most part, it requires a lot of work to make it green.

You can't just simply throw grass seeds and sprinkle water, and expect the sun and rain to take care of the rest.

Here are Justin's beautiful lawn tips:

Asses your yard and plant seeds
The first step to preparing your lawn is to identify what kind of grass you have or what type of grass would best suite the conditions of your yard. This all depends on the region you live in.
