Navy volunteers and Sea Cadets plant trees for Arbor Day

Navy volunteers and Coronado Sea Cadets participated in Coronado's 23rd Arbor Day Tree Planting event on April 14 at Spreckels Park. Sponsored by the city's Street Tree Committee, the Arbor Day celebration included a quick gardening lesson and plenty of shovels for community volunteers of all ages to help plant trees around the city.

"I want to personally dedicate this Arbor Day to the troops serving abroad," said Ron Henderson, chairman of Coronado's Street Tree Committee. "Throughout the years, we've had several people serving in the military helping us with this event and I appreciate what they do."

The sun glistened through the green canopy of older trees deeply rooted in Spreckels Park as Coronado Park Supervisor David Brazier instructed volunteers on how to plant a tree.

Horticulture paradise

Despite the climate and microclimates, the Puget Sound region is, according to garden-nursery owner Steve Smith, "a horticulture paradise."

The underpinnings of a garden that will thrive and survive starts literally from the ground up, says Smith, who co-owns Sunnyside Nursery in Marysville with wife Pauline.

Whether you are an experienced gardener or a new bud, start with dirt if you want to see green.

"My sage advice: The first year, don't spend a penny on plants," Smith says. "Put your money in soil. Get your ground prepared. Then the plants are the fun part. If you spend the time to get the soil in good condition, you can grow just about anything."

Apprenticeship scheme established in last-ditch attempt to save ...

PRODUCTION OF the world- renowned Harris Tweed is in danger of disappearing from the island which bears its name unless more people can be encouraged to take up weaving.

Despite continued demand for the unique fabric, handwoven to rigorous standards and protected by the Orb trademark and an Act of Parliament, the number of weavers based on Harris has dropped to less than 30, with most nearing retirement.

The fabric's future hangs in the balance and members of the local development trust on Harris have joined forces with a consultant from the Landscape Partnership Project to establish craft apprenticeships in a bid to arrest the decline.

landscape architect wins statewide awards

Chuck Taylor, landscape architect at Georgia Southern University for 10 years, was honored recently by the Georgia Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) for projects in two separate categories. He received an award of merit in the Parks and Public Works category for “Creating a Pedestrian-friendly Campus," a project that was implemented at Georgia Southern. He also received an award in the Pro Bono category for design work he donated to Ogeechee Area Hospice. “Creating a pedestrian-friendly campus at Georgia Southern was important for the safety of the students, faculty and staff," said Taylor, “but it carried the added benefit of encouraging walking and bicycling, two activities that are instrumental in improving health and well-being." Taylor took the lead in developing a master plan that eliminated dangerous cross traffic and moved parking and vehicular traffic to the perimeter of the campus.

SOUND OFF: Published April 17-19

Maybe the Internet is causing this war just as much as anything else. The world used to be a big place and then they said it was small. Now it's even smaller.I'm calling about the article I read the other day about washing the police cars in North Tonawanda. Why can't the people who have to do community service wash these vehicles or have the policeman wash their own cars like I've seen fire company do? Anytime someone has been offended by garbage on television or the radio, they've been told, "Change the channel. Turn the dial. You don't have to watch it, you don't have to listen to it." But Don Imus was not given the same consideration. Why didn't the Rev. Jesse Jackson or the Rev. Al Sharpton do the same?If anyone uses the phrase "rich pigs" twice in the Sound Off, don't take their advice.Don Imus isn't a 10th of the racist the Rev.
