Manning High students team with local leaders to plant trees ...

Dawkins brought a landscaping crew from his company along with some students from Manning to help plant trees at Bellwood Park.

After learning about trees and agriculture at Manning High and then Clemson, Dawkins was able to demonstrate the fruits of his knowledge and experience by giving back to his hometown community.

"It’s part of Palmetto Pride," said Dawkins while leaning on a shovel. "We just wanted to make an effort to help the community and try to do something to make the landscape a little prettier."

Dawkins studied in agriculture classes at Manning taught by Micheal Haynes, who brought some of his current students out to the park to help do the planting.

It was all part of an effort that came about after the City of Manning received a grant to get the trees and plant them for the ongoing beautification projects around town.

Rainbow Schools celebrate Earth Day

Rainbow Schools will showcase environmental initiatives at the Earth Day Festival on Sunday, April 22, 2007 at Market Square in Sudbury. As part of the exhibit, visitors will learn more about the environmental technology being used in the design and construction of the new Valley View Public School. "In Rainbow Schools, we are teaching our students sound sustainability practices so they become more aware of the impact that their actions have on our community and our environment," said Rainbow District School Board Chair, Dena Morrison. "Our schools are leading by example. We welcome the opportunity to celebrate the environment along with our community partners at the Sudbury Earth Day Festival and we encourage everyone to visit our display." Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School's Environmental Club will launch its composting program at the Earth Day Festival and will feature information about its annual leaf drive and tree planting activities.
