| Lakeshore Living Show
Owning a lake home or cabin isn't just about strolling among the pines and watching the sun set over the lake. There are a few other things to consider. Like septic tanks. And security. And protecting the shoreline. That's why the Lake Home and Cabin Show has seminars on these tougher topics, as well as seminars, demos and displays on North Woods building, landscaping and furnishing, plus exhibits by many other businesses selling life at the lake.More interested in cabin culture than structure? Architect, author and self-proclaimed "cabinologist" Dale Mulfinger will explore the cabin mystique and the allure of "up north." For the kids, the University of Minnesota Raptor Center will sponsor nature shows about bald eagles, complete with a real eagle's nest. The Lake Home and Cabin Show is open from 2 to 9 p.m.
Austin, Travis students join hands to remember a friend
On a chilly Friday night, dozens of teens rolled up their sweatshirt sleeves at Travis High School, put on heavy gloves and picked up shovels. They cleared away tough clumps of pampas grass from a plot of land, preparing a place to remember a dear friend.Tracie Hester died in a one-vehicle automobile accident Oct. 6, 2006 on her way home from college. She left behind not only her sisters, Tricia and Taylor, her brother, Nick, and her parents and step-parents, but also a host of friends, including the Stephen F. Austin High School Angels dancing team. Tracie had been an Austin Angel three of her four years at Austin, and the team had been an integral part of her life. To create a living tribute to her infectious love of life, the Angels partnered with the THS Belles to build a butterfly garden in Tracie's memory. The night Tracie was killed, the Angels were at a competition and dozens of butterflies kept floating around the girls while they were waiting for their results.
