Backyard blitz

SOME of Adelaide's SANFL and Adelaide United best had a different training session yesterday landscaping. A few of the boys from Central Districts joined new Adelaide United captain Angelo Costanzo to help out an Adelaide family in need.

The Benyo family of MacDonald Park Karen, Paul and their five daughters, aged between 16 and 2, had been saving up for years to build the perfect backyard.

But when Karen was diagnosed with breast cancer, their savings were spent on saving her life, rather than some plants and a lawn.

Luckily for the Benyos, they had a neighbour who cared and contacted the MIX102.3's breakfast team of Kym, Ali and Dzelde, to ask for help. With the support of the SA Fire Department, Central Districts and Adelaide United, the team from MIX were able to give the family the backyard they've always longed for.

Volunteers sought for Shasta Park

You could play a role in maximizing tax dollars spent at Shasta Park by volunteering to help install new playground equipment.

Manteca Parks and Recreation Department will employ the Volunteers Improving Park Playgrounds (VIPP) program to install the playground equipment so that upwards of $20,000 can be saved that will in turn be spent on other park improvements at Shasta.

The city has finished a $110,373 project conducted by Grover Landscaping Services to install concrete sidewalks, play curbs, park furniture, and to modify the irrigation system at Shasta Park. Grover Landscaping also removed what was left of the old playground.

Shasta Park will mark the fourth time VIPP has been used to improve playgrounds. Other VIPP projects have taken place at Chadwick Square, Woodward, and Graystone parks.

Lompoc Library upgrades complete

A handicap access improvement project at the Lompoc Library north entrance, which closed the building parking lot for several months, is practically complete, Library Director Molly Gerald said Thursday.

The north entrance features four new parking lots for the handicapped, a wheelchair ramp with handrails, and some new landscaping with drought-tolerant plants.

The sidewalk and lighting system have also been redone, she said.

The parking lot closed in October and reopened in March. Gerald said the closure did not affect library patronage.

“We didn't see a real decrease in our circulation," Gerald said.

“It was inconvenient but people were very nice about it."

The safety-improvement project cost $210,000, with funds coming from a state community development block grant.

Dry-landscape prof spread seeds of knowledge

The author, landscape architect and retired University of Arizona professor was an early proponent of xeriscaping — landscaping that conserves water — and taught two generations of landscape architects the importance of using drought-tolerant plants. .
