| Building a drought-tolerant garden: Are you a ‘xeri’ or ‘semi-xeri?’
A drought-tolerant garden need not be a yard full of cactus but can be colorful and artistic. Drought-tolerant gardens are also known as xeriscape. What is xeriscape? It is not the mythical home of Greek gods, nor is it the first settlement on the moon.
The word is derived from the Greek word xeros, which means dry. A pure xeriscape requires no water and is comprised of plants whose root systems will eventually dig deep enough to find their own water. With a little imagination, and a lot of planning, you will be able to step outside your door and feel the tranquillity of connecting with the earth without the guilt of wasting water.
You can choose to be a strict xeri and train your garden to use little or no water, or a semi-xeri and use a drip line and a slight amount of water.
Lawn parking proposals examined
SOUTH BEND -- The Common Council is looking at two proposals to address lawn parking in the city code, neither of which include a special-event parking clause affecting University of Notre Dame home football weekends.
Although the issue is tied to property owners using their lawns for parking during football games, city officials say it's a year-round problem in some neighborhoods.
One of the proposals would add a new article in Chapter 14 of the municipal code that deals with lawn parking from a public safety perspective.

Protestors herald wind of change
VICTORIOUS campaigners who defeated plans for a windfarm near Allonby said their win should act as a ‘wake-up call' in the fight to stop future developments. Jane Jackson, who fought against proposals for the five-turbine wind farm at Brownrigg Hall Farm, urged other people to follow their example to “stop the abuse of our landscape". More than 1,000 villagers, visitors and business owners from Allonby and the surrounding area objected when the firm Nuon Renewables submitted the blueprint. Allerdale councillors on the development panel refused the plans on grounds that the windfarm would have a detrimental visual impact on the landscape and would harm tourism. Mrs Jackson said she was pleased with the decision, but said there was no time to rest, as there were similar applications under consideration in Oughterside, Westnewton and Tallentire.
