| NCC plans day to assist community
Volunteers from all walks of life will cross paths Saturday in Naperville as North Central College organizes Intersection, a day of community service. Jeremy Gudauskas, director of ministry and service, said the event is to raise awareness of needs in the community. I think theres emphasis on one day, but we hope to continue to build partnerships and relationships with organizations and individual people in the future so service becomes a lifestyle, attitude and mindset (more) than just a project, he said. Intersection begins at 8:30 a.m. with a send-off from The Union, 129 W. Benton Ave. Volunteers will be at their sites until about 4 p.m. They have a choice of five organizations to assist the Naperville Family Resource Center and Katherine Manor Apartments in Naperville and Wayside Cross, Hesed House and the Aurora Preservation Commission in Aurora.
Let's get started: Garden dreams begin with planning
A beautiful landscape doesn't just happen overnight, and it won't happen at all unless you first develop a well-seasoned strategy. Whether your goal is to create an engaging front courtyard garden or an inviting backyard retreat, you can get started with these guidelines. Examine your site: Become familiar with your yard's assets and liabilities. Evaluate sunny and shady areas, microclimates and wind patterns, soil conditions, and the topography of the land, including slopes and grades, and any views you would like to enhance or hide. Make a note of your property boundaries, and measure the size and shape of your space, including structures such as your house, garage, etc., and physical features such as a driveway or deck. Craft a plan of action: Think about how you want to use your yard and make a wish list of features to make it happen.
Get the buzz on great lawn mowers
USEFUL INFO Be sure to protect your hearing while mowing your lawn. Consumer Reports recommends wearing hearing protection while using mowers at or above 85 decibels. Regular mowing is as vital to a healthy lawn as watering, fertilizing and weeding, because slicing off too much at a time harms the grass. Fortunately, a bumper crop of easier-starting mowers and wider-cutting tractors -- at lower prices -- is making this weekly ritual easier for homeowners. .
