DPS to tow vehicles in Williams' Bakery lot

The Department of Public Safety will tow all vehicles parked at the former Williams' Bakery site near the University's 13th Avenue and Franklin Boulevard entrance starting Monday morning around midnight, DPS announced Thursday.

DPS wants to close the gravel lot temporarily to enhance the lot and enforce parking rules.

"This place is a zoo," said Ken Boegli, DPS parking and transportation manager, pointing to vehicles lined along a fence at the site Thursday afternoon. Some vehicles were parked behind others, and vehicles in some rows weren't even with each other. Cars were parked in potholes.

"This lot isn't up to our standards right now," Boegli said. "In order to fix the lot, we have to get all these cars out."

DPS wants to add striping, signs, landscaping and lighting.

Winter freeze fades, landscapers see sales grow

STOCKTON - Business is finally in full bloom for garden landscapers, as a freezing winter closes and spring blossoms. The demand for landscape installations rise each spring, area land scape designers say.

And the recent cold snap that killed numerous plants like birds of paradise, kiffir lillies and philodendrons provided gardeners an opportunity to replace dead plants.

"Contractors and home owners have been replacing things like crazy because of the frost," said Bill Snyder, a landscape architect and owner of The Garden Concepts of Bill Snyder in Stockton.

Another thing: As home and commercial construction kicks into higher gear, landscaping businesses are trying to keep up, added Snyder.

At the Morada home of Sue and Barry Maashoff, about a dozen dead oleander shrubs along a fence will be replaced by Creative Outdoor Environments, a Lathrop-based design and maintenance contractor.

Discussion of potential parks projects continues

The process of creating a parks master plan for the city of Grandview Heights is moving into a key stage.

The steering and stakeholders committees formed for the parks planning process met April 12 with representatives of the city's parks consultant, Edsall & Associates. The meeting included continued discussion about potential design concepts that could be included in a final master plan.

After the initial stage of gathering public input and creating design concepts, the process now involves setting priorities about what should be developed and how plans can be implemented and paid for, Parks and Recreation Director Sean Robey said.

Architect Tim Hawk of WSA Studios reviewed the potential architectural work that could be done at each park.

"We are working to create an aesthetic in structures that complement the existing structures in Grandview and the Grandview area," Hawk said.

FUNDS FOR STRONGER LANDSCAPE PROTECTION ON SURF COAST

Surf Coast Shire will receive up to $35,000 to update its planning scheme with stronger protection for its unique coastal landscapes, the Minister for Planning, Justin Madden, announced today. The funding is part of a $600,000 Bracks Government commitment to support the implementation of the Coastal Spaces Landscape Assessment Study, released in September last year. .
