TV gardening personality returns to centre

TV gardening personality Christine Walkden is returning to Sanders GardenWorld in April to talk to visitors and host a book signing to tie in with her new BBC series.

The plant expert (pictured here with centre assistant Caroline Ruse) stars in BBC2's Christine's Garden and will be at the Brent Knoll business on April 23 to chat to customers and autograph copies of her latest tome.

Sanders managing director Peter Burks said: "Christine visited the garden centre twice last year and filmed snippets of her series here.

"Christine's previous visits have been very successful with our customers.

She was able to share her extensive knowledge and pass on tips to budding gardeners - we are looking forward to her return."

You've got the whole world in your hands FAMILY AFFAIRSTEP UP THIS ...

Shimon and her two sons, Madison Jonas, 14, and Cooper Jonas, 8, are one of many Fredericksburg-area families who live Earth Day every day.

The Spotsylvania County family is undeniably busy.

Shimon is an English teacher at Courtland High School and has another part-time job. Her sons are involved in several after-school activities.

But despite their hectic schedules, they take time to compost, separate their recyclables and re-use everything from egg cartons to toilet paper rolls--which her youngest son uses in his art projects.

"It's important to find the time for it," Shimon said. "It's worth it."

Kate Logan's three children are grown now, but they grew up recycling and helping Logan in the family's vegetable garden.

Taking the time to plan better

I attended my first James City County Planning Commission meeting recently to commend the commission on deferring the Williamsburg Pottery application. The previous Prime Outlets and Pottery plans were deferred. The commission challenged them to come up with a different way of doing business. Prime Outlets not only responded, but went above and beyond.

The new plan was a crystal ball into the future of responsible development in James City County. Benches will be placed among beautiful, landscaped promenades. Also, pavers - a different product than usual - will be used to reduce runoff, and the water that is collected will be used to water the landscaping. Proffers for sophisticated water drainage were included. Buildings will be constructed with historical touches and, more importantly, energy conservation in mind.

It is not, in other words, filled with spandex-clad enthusiasts (though the shop does sell biking apparel). It isnt packed with accessories aimed only at gearheads (though it does sell specialized gear), and it isnt priced exclusively for the professional (though it does sell high-end bikes).

There are a lot of good bike shops in town, but I like going into Queen City Cycles because its not a super-competitive, lets-go-race-bikes kind of place, says Thom Hutchison, a Springfield computer programmer and bike commuter. Its like going into a bike shop and youre 10 (years old) again and everyones all excited and everyones like, Lets go ride bikes, no matter what kind of bike it is.

Since opening in late 2004, Queen City Cycles has gained a reputation as a laid-back venue for bike enthusiasts, as a hot-spot for unusual and custom-made bikes and as a top-notch repair shop for bikes new, old and just plain odd.

Hockney landscapes make UK debut

Artist David Hockney's new paintings of the East Yorkshire landscape will make their UK debut at a major exhibition at London's Tate Britain later this year.

The June exhibition will mark the UK artist's forthcoming 70th birthday, and will include five new paintings.

Hockney will also help curate the Tate's largest exhibition of Turner's watercolours, including The Blue Rigi.

Hockney grew up in West Yorkshire, but is more famous for his California-based works, such as A Bigger Splash.

Though based in Los Angeles, the artist has intermittently returned to the coastal town of Bridlington, East Yorkshire, to visit his family.

In recent years, he has become inspired by the local landscape, which he has compared to the wide vistas of the American west.

Some of his work from the area has been shown in the US, but this will be the first time the new paintings have been seen in the UK.
