Simon Chamberlain

In this industry, I am Simon Chamberlain, chief executive of the Thinc Group. That is who I am to people but that tells people nothing of what I am."

Following the flotation of St James's Place, Chamberlain went on gardening leave for about 18 months. It was then that he "rediscovered that he had a family", having focused his efforts on work for the previous 10 years. "Without meaning to sound cheesy, I realised that there is a huge difference between being a parent and being a father."

During his year of reflection and having redressed his work/life balance, Chamberlain wrote a book called Why, Not What, which has yet to be published.

"It will be my legacy. If we stopped to ask the question 'why?' more often, rather than focusing on 'what' people are doing, they could go a lot further and achieve a lot more."

School district wins award for water conservation

It takes a lot of water to keep all seven school campuses in the southern part of the Nye County School District running.

There are fields to be watered and sprinklers under the constant and perpetual threat of getting kicked off by student feet, play or just plain wanton vandalism.

So managing to conserve about 8.5 million gallons of water during the course of the 2005 to 2006 academic year was no small feat for the Nye County School District's maintenance and operations crew.

But they did it.

As a result, Superintendent Rob Roberts and Bob Whimpey, head of Maintenance and Operations, were presented a Cashman Good Government finalist award.

The water that was saved translated into some saved cash as well, and Whimpey said the conservation effort trimmed $4,816 off the southern district's bill.

LITCHFIELD COUNTY: Water-soaked landscape

The downpour that accompanied this week's nor'easter kept fire departments and emergency crews around Litchfield County hopping throughout the day Monday.

In Winsted, the Mills apartment building at 101 Whiting St. was closed Monday, after water flooded outdoor utility facilities on the Still River side of the former mill building. Town Manager Owen J. Quinn Jr. said about 50 residents were forced to relocate for the night, and a shelter with cots for 25 people was setup in the Elm Street firehouse. Most residents, Quinn said, had made other arrangements and were not planning to use the shelter.

Water also covered portions of Route 8 near the sewage treatment plant.

Quinn said power and gas service to the former mill building on Whiting Street had been cut off, though residents would be allowed to return later in the day if the water receded as expected.
