The New Partisan Landscape

The latest Democracy Corps survey and a close examination of the three months of surveys this year reveal a new partisan landscape in the country. Its contours were evident after Katrina and confirmed last November, but the public's preference for Democrats has widened even further since then, pervading almost every area of political combat. Many commentators noted the different levels of enthusiasm of Democratic and Republican voters for their respective presidential candidates; others commented on the growing Democratic advantage in party identification and most recently in fundraising.

The only downside presented in the memo is that the favorability rating of the new Democratic Congress is down a few points, as is the public's "hopefulness" about what Congress doing (-9 points over the last two and half months).

Boom in New Hotels Bringing Boom in Old Hotel Renovations

As far as construction goes, digging up sand on Mission Bays shoreline is easier and faster than the countys rocky soil inland, Brent Bunting, a project manager for Webcor Builders, said as he walked past backhoes and Bobcats in the courtyard of the Hyatt Regency Islandia.

Despite the relative ease of moving the earth around to make way for new swimming pools, renovating a hotel that is open and fully operational is slow going, he said.

But we manage just fine, he added, pointing to a grease board schedule that covers three walls of Webcors on-site construction trailer. Weve had the full cooperation of the staff. We talk every morning.

Out of deference to the guests, the construction crew holds off pounding nails before 9 a.m. well behind the crack-of-dawn banging and clanking heard on most building sites.

Reinvigorated Java IDEs change the development landscape

Java IDEs have improved steadily over the last few years. Products from IBM, Borland, and Sun show just how far they've come. By Andrew Binstock, InfoWorld, 03/27/07

Java IDEs are one of the most-used app dev tools in corporate development. They are also among the most capable developer products on the market. With that in mind, it's time to ask yourself: Are you using the Java IDE best suited to your needs, or is it time to re-evaluate?

InfoWorld last did a head-to-head comparison of these products in March 2005, and since then, the IDEs have all undergone important changes. This time, I decided to examine the winner of that review (Borland JBuilder) plus the winners of InfoWorld's Technology of the Year awards, in the Java IDE product category, for 2006 and 2007—IBM Rational and Sun NetBeans, respectively.
