Greenhouses and flowers replace fields and vegetables
The Haefners, Marsha and Greg, are the fourth generation of the Haefner family to make their living growing things in Oakville.
At the turn of the 20th century, Germans filled south St. Louis County and turned it into a patchwork of truck farms. The Haefner family was among them.
Only two truck farms remain in south St. Louis County, but this generation of Haefners continues to turn seed and dirt and water into plant and profit by growing and selling flowers. The family farm, once five acres in Oakville, is now 20 greenhouses in Oakville and House Springs. They grow more than 500,000 plants a year.
The roadside stand now is called For The Garden by Haefners, a plant, garden supply and gift shop at Telegraph and Heintz roads. The shop is almost three stories of glass and steel filled with items such as garden angels, Japanese lanterns, glass flowers and fountains.
INDIAN LAND: Nursery plants roots in growing area
The nursery carries a variety of products, says owner Mary Russo, from perennials and container trees to ceramic pots, railroad ties, and pine straw. In June, Russo says, she'll also stock fountains and outdoor furniture. "It's going to be a good mix of product," Russo says. .
