Wildflowers are more than just pretty faces. At the April meeting of Zumbro Valley Audubon Society, Joel Dunnette will talk about the value of these pretty faces. They perform the critical function of reproduction and often do so in surprising ways, he says. Dunnette, past president of the Minnesota Native Plant Society, speaks at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Quarry Hill Nature Center, 701 Silver Creek Road N.E., Rochester. There will be refreshments and a gathering at 6:45 p.m. The program is free and open to the public. April showers bring lovely lilac flowers
April showers bring one of the best, most fragrant of all May flowers -- the heavenly scented lilac. These landscape favorites range from dwarf shrubs to small ornamental trees and can actually provide two full months of scented bloom in shades of purples, pinks, whites and bicolors. They arrived in this country about 400 years ago with the first European settlers, and our love for this plant has grown ever since. So much so that New Hampshire crowned it its state flower and cities around the country play host to lilac celebrations. (For details on the Spokane Lilac Festival and its big parade on May 19, see lilacfestival.org.) The wood of the lilac is actually very hard; the sapwood is beige in color, and the heartwood sports hues of purple and brown. As a result, it's a highly sought-after wood by craftsmen for inlay woodworking in such items as knife handles, musical instruments and jewelry boxes.
Board approves landscaping plan
Woodhull - The Clover Library at Woodhull qualified for the Illinois Public Library per capita grant and will receive $3,042. The Office of Secretary of State, Jesse White, notified the library of the grant, with more than $14 million awarded through the Per Capita and Equalization Aid Grant program to Illinois public libraries. The library board last week approved the estimate of $715 from Rutledge Landscaping of Alpha for maintenance and seasonal work to the lawn and shrubs. The initial cost was the same as previous years, $465, with the added cost of $75 for lawn seed application and $175 for gravel around the shrubs. Head librarian Rene Bramlett reported on plans for the summer reading program, including the kick-off party June 8 with special guest magician, ventriloquist, puppeteer and storyteller Rob Erdmann.
Business community celebrates its best at Nova Awards ceremony
When the organizing committee for the Timmins Chamber of Commerce's Nova Awards discovered the McIntyre Arena would be the venue, they had two options. They could either use creative decorating and lighting to mask the hockey-arena feel, or they could accept it. Mary-Lou Pollon, event co-chairperson of the Nova Awards, said the committee didn't just accept the hockey arena atmosphere - they embraced it. "Our committee used their imaginations on how we can take this arena and use it as an awards ceremony gala," Pollon said during the award ceremonies held Thursday night. "I'm very pleased with how it looks, and the attendance. .
